A fairly long and mostly dull drive today. We did find the nice town of Cambridge with a Farmer's Market for us to wander round to stretch our legs. The heat was unprecedented in the low 30s centigrade, the motels location was a long way from the centre of the town so walking was out of the question. We decided to attend an evening event when it would be cooler. There are many organised trips for tourists in Rotorua some of them do not look good value. We plumped for a Maori performance, a glow worm walk and a trip to Rainbow springs which had a walk round its Kiwi enclosures. Being a nocturnal bird it was a great chance to these rare shy birds actually up and about doing things. The Maori performance was in Matai Maori village. The show was not as authentic feeling as our show in Waitangi. The Hangi (feast cooked using a stone lined ground oven) was not impressive either, the food was dry and over cooked. What made the trip worthwhile was the glow worm walk through the grounds and the natural springs that were so clear we could see the crayfish and eels in it. Then on to the Kiwis the undoubted highlight of the evening. No photographs as the flashes would disturb the birds and they moved to quickly to take anything with out flash in the low light. In addition to the Kiwis we got to see some of the other NZ birds, the Kea and Kakapo and the long lived and with an ancient lineage the tuatara lizard.
