Headed cross country; its about 10 C and the cold is an issue. Also just dodging rain showers so a couple of stops at petrol stations / bus stops ( which are particularly well built here with enclosed seating. I find the initial target which is famous for its jewish quarter. There is a hostel but its closed so I just ride around. Its nice and quaint with old houses and winding streets but not that exceptional. Not quite sure what Lonely Planet found to do here; its nice but not particularly diverting.

The countryside is particularly pretty in the last bit although the hostel is shabby and not ideal. Its part of an old concert hall / bar set of buildings so the room sizes are large with an idiosyncratic layout. Some of the dorms lead off other dorms which makes its impossible to lock the door as well as the traffic. Another one has a sofa and armchairs with bunk beds in the corner. Definitely an odd concept. The area seems a bit rough in the sense of lots of take-aways but its on a main tram route too. The hostel turns out to be very quiet, full of old furniture and minor things that have been bodged. It does however have the basic ingredients of a kitchen and there is a supermarket round the corner. Not sure at the moment.

In the evening I go for a quick walk into town and realise that the hostel is a fair way outside the centre; that there are a lot of bars and almost all of them are near empty. Gambling / slot machines are heavily advertised with many bar windows being obscured by them. Curiously there was also a laundry bar; seems like a great idea if they really do have washing machines.
