So.. .beach action sadly curtailed by food poisoning action which wiped us both out for a day and bit, meaning no trip to Vina del Mar and only two short walks around Valpo.
Valparaiso is a mixture of stuff. Cute corrugated iron houses in different colours, very very hilly and cobbly, lots of little bars and cafes in nooks and crannies, but also a big heavy industrial port complete with lots of Navy ships which you are banned from taking photos of- not that we tried it. As an aside, in NZ the Navy ships are parked up in the main harbour for months at a time when you are encouraged to come aboard, have your photo taken with the Navy boys, ask technical questions, borrow missiles for a laugh..that kind of thing.
So we are sad not to have seen more of Valparaiso and less of the inside of our hostel (nice though it was}, but these are the occupational hazards of not having an occupation. Onwards and southwards- 5 day trip into the Chilean Lakes District starts tomorrow.
