Hawaii is reputed to have very high prices for just about everything, but I haven't been shocked by anything but the cost of internet access, hence the brief update.

We are nearing the end of our stay here. It has been really interesting to have first visited the Big Island, the newest of the Hawaiian chain, and now Kaua'i, the oldest. Here the old lava has broken down to soil hospitable to the many plant species imported here from around the world. The soil and abundant rainfall on the north and eastern side of the island combine to make it richly vegetated nearly everywhere.

We've done some hiking here along the northern coast. The muddy, slippery trail made it much less fun as we had to carefully watch our footsteps rather than take in the foliage and ever changing views of the coastline.

We've been doing some snorkeling and I had a moderately successful surfing lesson yesterday. We will be taking motorized raft ride to the Na Pali Coast tomorrow. Just before we fly back to Seattle on Thursday we'll be taking a helicopter ride around the island. We both had reservations about doing this as we both find choppers overhead an irritant, but many people have told us that the ride is quite spectacular and this is the only way to see the interior of the island.

The weather is wonderfully mild, but we've had more clouds, wind and rain than sun, but it hasn't dampened our spirits any.

See you all again too soon.
