So on our first night in Muang Ngoi there was much lightening in the distance, lighting up the mountains and generally looking cool. However, just as we were about to go and investigate the 'beach bar' on the river we'd heard about, there was a mighty crack and the skies opened. And so to bed instead.

The next day we awoke to discover the clouds had descended, and that without the sun it was pretty cold in the mountains. This put paid to our plans of exploring the area, and made the others restless, but after all the travelling recently I was happy to have a enforced day of relaxing. And what a relaxing place Muang Ngoi is - its so cut off there are no motor vehicles, no mobile reception, no mains electricity and no internet, hence the fact I'm updating all this a few days late. The only communication consists of a 40 foot long bamboo pole with an aerial on one end and a phone on the other - they waggle the pole around and hope to get a signal from faraway Luang Prabang. Had a gentle wander round the village and spent more time in my hammock...
