Hello all! I did not drop off the face of the earth. I arrived safely in Esteli on Monday and immediately went to my school to check in and take a test. They placed us (my friend Lisa and I) with a family and we started lessons the next afternoon. We actually got placed across the street from each other because I´m staying with one of the teachers at the school and she´s in her mother-in-law´s house across the way. The family is very nice - mom, dad, two daughters and a puppy. We had our second lesson today and they advanced me to the next level book, but it definitely got harder today. I think I´ll learn a good amount and the next step it to practice it.

Lisa and I have plans on Saturday to visit a nature reserve project call UCA Miraflor. We´re going to take a horse ride to see some waterfalls and an outlook for the day. The bus leaves really early, so we´ll have to get an early start. Then I have to leave early again on Sunday to catch a bus from Esteli to Managua to get to the airport. My flight leaves at 12 in the afternoon, so I will want to plan in plenty of cushion time.

So really I only have another couple of days here in Esteli. Oh, also today we went with a couple of other students and a guide at the school to visit a paper recycling project. It´s really cool. It´s a group of women who turned a neighborhood dump into a garden with a workshop to recycle paper and make notecards and books to sell. They have volunteers to help out, but mostly it´s 6 single mom´s that are working to educate their neighborhood about taking care of the enviornment. Deforestation, climate change, composting, etc.

Lisa and I are finding our way around and while it´s not a very pretty town, the people are friendly and there is a lot going on. I don´t know if I´ll have time for another entry again before I leave, but all is well.

Besos,

kathy hope
