After a fairly pain-free drive to Toronto on a nice sunny day, we enjoyed an early supper at an Asian restaurant near the hotel and hit the sack early. A 3:30 a.m. wakeup call gave us plenty of time to get to the lobby for the 4:00 am shuttle. As an afterthought I asked the desk attendant if in fact there was a 4:00 am shuttle. His jaw dropped. No, he thought there was no-one taking the 4:00 am shuttle and had cancelled. Major panic. We were supposed to be at the airport at 4 so even if the shuttle were there, we'd still be a bit late. However, it didn't take too long to rustle one up and although we were probably one of the last to check in, we were still in plenty of time.

Flight went straight to Camaguey and after a quick disembarkation we were out near the two waiting buses. Glitch numero dos! Our hotel wasn't open and we were to go to another hotel. However this particular glitch turned out to be a bonus since the new hotel, Brisas Santa Lucia was a definite step up.

After an enjoyable 1 1/2 hour bus ride through the countryside and a couple of small villages, we arrived at the hotel and found our room in one of the numerous 3-story high groups of units placed around the grounds. The hotel had been closed for 2 months over the hot, low-tourist season and our group's arrival marked 're-opening day'. Whilst we were there the hotel remained only about 1/4 full which suited us just fine.
