Huaraz is the high-altitude city at the base of the Cordillera Blanca, the highest mountain range outside of Asia. After spending a few days feeling the effects of the altitude, we made our way into Huascaran National Park for a few nights in the backcountry. We shared the massive valleys with a only handful of local villagers and saw only two other groups of trekkers. Cows were our constant companions, though, and actually make very scary sounds at night. We camped on a lake at the base of a huge glacier and 20,000 foot-tall mountains, and took a day hike to another alpine lake. The park was a fitting adventure for our last few days in Peru.
