Heading southwest, our next stop was Arequipa, and its accompanying Colca canyon, the world's deepest.  The city is in the region of three huge volcanoes, and is known for its white-volcanic-rock architecture.  We loved the food here, and wandered the city and its centuries-old monastery.

Because of a lack of planning on our part around the busy Easter weekend, we did only an expedited trip into the Colca Canyon.  A long bus ride brought us to the canyon rim town of Cabanaconde, a great spot to check out the massive Andean Condors that frequent the area.  Our destination was a patch of green in the bottom of the desert canyon known as the Oasis, a spring-fed area where a a handful of rustic guesthouses and campgrounds operate, offering food, accommodation, and great pools amongst the palms  We got to camp for one night before the hike up and out.
