We spent 24 hours traveling along Ruta 40 to reach our final Patagonia destinations, the hippy/farmer town of El Bolson and the resort town of San Carlos de Bariloche.  Ruta 40 has a similar mystique to Route 66, however, we soon learned that it`s more of a survivor`s road: for every hour of interesting scenery, there`s ten hours of bleak nothingness.  We made it though!

In Bolson, besides celebrating St. Pattie`s Day (which also happened to be our ten year anniversary of meeting each other), we strolled the artist´s fairs, relaxed at our campground, and Jay consumed a record number of empanadas.  While we talked about hiking in the surrounding mountains, we decided to save it for next time.

We fell in love with Bariloche, which is an incredible lake-side city that boasts excellent mountain views, ala Queenstown, New Zealand.  Crazily, Susie ran into a high school classmate, Andy Fidelman, at our hostel, and we spent some fun days with him and his Chilean wife, Valentina.

For our last Patagonia trek, we planned a four day loop in the mountains outside of town, but upon arriving at our first night´s destination, Frey Hut, never made it further.  We unexpectedly met our friend Scott here, and together with some of his friends, spent the next few days enjoying the Frey area.  Jay even got to go on a rock climb with Scott, a climber-extraordinaire.
