Sunday, September 3, 2006

Iīm battered today after a pretty jammed packed day yesterday. We arrived in La Fortuna two days ago after an over night stop in a small town called Canas in Northern Costa Rica. The change in lifestyle is apparent when crossing the border, Nicaragua very poor and Costa Rica, almost a first world country. The buildings on the Costa Rica side were brick and air conditioned rather than little shacks.

The roads are also better, which makes travelling easier, no more chicken buses. La Fortunaīs main attraction is Volcan Arenal the second most active volcano in the world and visible from anywhere in the town. On our first night we meet some German girls and when out to a local club, this has inspired me but Iīll get onto to that in a bit.

The second day and slightly hungover we meet up with an English girl called Natalie and went to La Catarana de Fortuna, a huge waterfall near La Fortuna. After a short taxi ride and walk we got to the falls. After enjoying the freezing cold water we got back to the town ready for a tour up the volcano. A short break later we meet up with another English girl called Poppy and we were ready for the tour.

The tour started at the base of the Volcano and we trekked through the rainforest, spotting animals such as howler monkeys, spider monkeys, sloughs, leaf cutter ants, toucans and other birds of paradise. We had an fantastic guide who spotted all sorts of life in the jungle. A short walk out of the jungle lead to a clearing where we watched sunset over the volcano and a natural light show.

The volcano is the second most active in the world, erupting every 10mins and throwing out lava the size of cars. Therefore we canīt get any closer than 2 km away, but with Dadīs binoculars I was able to see clearly the huge rocks crashing down the active cone.

On the way back we stopped at Baldi Termae springs for a bit of Luxary and two hours in naturally heated thermal pools.

Oxford Boys - If you are going to stay somewhere in Fortuna stay at Gringo Petes, its only 3 and a half dollars and night, its a nice place with hummingbird pots in the garden (very cool) and they do discounted tours half the price of other tours in the town.

Thats yesterday, today Iīve arrived in San Jose ready for my inspiration. My original idea was to go south to Panama to see Bocas del Toras, however Iīve decided to stay in San Jose and learn to dance. After learning a little in Merida, Mexico I decided to take lessons here for the next week, canīt be anywhere better than San Jose. So Iīm off to a big salsa night tonight and start lessons tomorrow. Next week watch out Ricky Martin.....
