What is the god damn point of mosquitos???

I left Flores in Guatemala two days ago at 6am. My original plan was to spend a day in San Ignacio in Belize then head up to Merida, this soon changed. Iīd been feeling a little under the weather so I decided in the morning to try and get a bus straight through to Chetumal in Mexico, the bus was going that direction anyway. I slipped the bus driving 10 dollars and he agreed to let me travle the extra distance.

Around lunch time we crossed the border to Belize, A warm welcome as everyone speaks English, I soon noticed after I got no response from Buenas Dias.

2 hours later I said goodbye to Felicity in Belize City and headed north to the border. Another 4 hours I was across the border, to my relief as I didnīt get an exit stamp when leaving the country 2 weeks ago. At this point my cold had got worst and I was considering staying in Chetumal for one night, but decided to push on. At the bus station I managed to get my hands on some pencilin and medicine for what was now a full blown chest infection. What was frustrating was that there was no buses to Tulum, so I decided to bit the bullet and get an over night bus ride to Merida on the opposite coast of Cancun. I had to wait from 4pm to 11pm for my bus, during that time I meet a local Mexican called Wilbert. My spanish canīt be that bad as we had a three hour conversation and had food together at a local taco shop.

25 hours after originally setting off I arrive at Nomadas Hostel. After another 2 hour wait for a bath I could eventually have a shower and chill out. The laundry service down the road could not clean my clothes until Monday, due to the weekend. So I decided to hand wash everything, which suprisingly worked quite well, even managed to clean my stinking jeans ready to wear the same night. Soon after I crashed in a hammock. A couple of hours later I awoke to find that mosquitos had tucked into numerous parts of my body, little gits!! After travelling for 6 weeks with only a couple bits I now had over 30 bits.

That night have a another sleep I meet with two american guys, pietro and dzuy, and two english girls, Alice and Katy. It was a saturday night street party and many live bands were playing, we kicked of our shoes and tryed our best to salsa, to the amusement of the locals. After a while we started to get tired and sat down, the girls didnīt get much of a break because every couple of minutes another bloke asked then to dance, most amusing was Alice dancing with a 15 year old boy.

The second day I got up early again with the american guys to go to Uxmal, mayan ruins to the south of Merida. The site was fairly small compared to Tikal but had well preserved carvings and many temples to climb. Also at the site because the biggest concerntration of Iguanas I had ever seen, basking in the sun. By mid day we were flaggin from the heat and caught a bus back to Merida, after a keep taco stop we went back to the hostel. The rest of the afternoon I tried catching up on some sleep, watched a film and was about to go to sleep when persuaded by pietro to go out for a quick drink. I only stayed out an hour.

The final day I have spent walking around the town, enjoying the markets and the many churches. Many people come to Merida to buy hammocks, but I much perfer thoose in Antigua, here they are more synthetic, in Antigua you get something alot nicer and pure wool. I also spent two hours queing for a ticket for my bus to cancun. Iīve learnīt my lesson from Chetumal and we book in advance in this part of Mexico. Off to cancun at 8am tomorrow to meet Lou...
