We meet Detlef, Diana, Klara, and Thilo at 2:30pm and load our bicycles onto their RV. We ride with them over to the ferry and find it very strange to be in a moving vehicle again -- it's a good thing the trip to the boat isn't very far or Yannick might get car sick! As we board the ferry, we say goodbye to Chiloe Island and the Southern terminus of the Pan-American Highway.
Motoring across the ocean, we are treated to spectacular views of snowy mountains, forested islets, sheer rock faces, and glistening water – all of which remind us so much of kayaking in Alaska. After a little over 4 hours on the Pacific, we arrive at the docks just outside of Chaiten, a small town devastated by a volcanic eruption in 2008. From a distance, we can see what used to be a river entering the ocean, but it is now just a long sandbar of ash. Once we all disembark from the boat and unload the RV, we say goodbye to the adorable family and reassemble the bikes. By now, it’s a little passed 10pm and we decide to sleep inside the empty, unlocked waiting room for the ferry next to the dock.
Tomorrow, we say hello to The Carratera Austral.
