Day 5 (12/22/2010): As we slept last night, we kept waking up to the sounds of heavy downpour and fierce gusts of wind blowing against the walls and windows of our room. Shirley kept sleepily wishing the unforgiving weather would pass with each rude awakening, but when morning came, the weather was still looking bleak. We lay in bed for a long time just listening and getting ourselves motivated to hit the road despite the conditions outside. We are getting restless and feel the need to make some headway. We check the weather forecast and find that things should improve later this afternoon, so we pack our bags and load up the bicycles. At 11am, we bid farewell to Chick and pedal our bicycles down the street.

We take the Toll Road through Rosarito until we near the toll booth, where we decide to exit. From here, we ride along the Free Road lined with businesses and restaurants. We keep an eye on the kilometer markers to measure our distance from Primo Tapia and notice a really nice surf spot at km38. The roads are in pretty good condition with a shoulder for us to ride on (most of the time) and the cars give us plenty of room as they pass, so we feel more comfortable than we thought we would so far. The rain comes and goes, but we can see blue skies in the far distance over the ocean, giving us hope for better weather soon.

By the time we make it to Primo Tapia, there is just a tiny drizzle. We eat a late lunch at the panaderia (bakery), pass the military checkpoint, and find our way to Larry's house pretty easily where we receive a warm welcome. We take advantage of his water spicket to wash off the globs of mud coating all of our panniers, bicycles and shoes before getting comfy in his house. Just as we finish watching the sunset from his porch, Larry serves us steaming hot bowls of chicken and dumplings. Oooh my, it really hits the spot! Aaah, another good evening in good company...indoors, sheltered from the rain.
Only 15 miles today! and 6th rainy day in a row. Tomorrow we should be in Ensenada.
