Unfortunately, the weather at the Milford Sound did not allow us to fly there. In Queenstown the weather was pretty nice in the morning, so we decided to discover the surrounding area and drove to Wanaka, about 100 km from Queenstown. The ride there was pretty nice, the town was also on a lake with the same name. There was a gravel road to the Mount Aspiring Natl. Park which we took, not many people there and lots of creek crossings without bridges, cool.
On the way back it started to rain, but we found another side road which led us to the Skipper Canyon, you cannot even imagine how beautiful this was. Of course, it was a one way single car sand- and gravel road, one side up the other pretty much straight down the canyon, but really fun. Somebody in our two person travel group got very nervous. Needless to say that only licensed cars and drivers were allowed on the road. Later I found out that rental car companies decline any insurance for this trail. Did not really matter as I did not accept any insurance on the car to begin with. We did today around 450 km, 50% off road, so I got pretty used to drive on the wrong side. Guys, watch out when I get to Germany or back to the US.
I have attached some pictures, but they don't do justice to the beauty of this area.
