So, I guess I should tell you that Vista Verde is actually in a town called Clark about 30-40 minutes right outside of Steamboat Springs.  Today, my day off, my friend Ryan and I headed out to King Solomon Water Falls just past Hans Peak.  Ryan had said there were three falls in a row and we could hike till we found them all...  Fine by me, I have the whole day off!

First thing in the a.m., we went to the town General store to get gas.  You'll notice on the picture that it serves as the ice cream parlor, liquor store, post office and gas station.  Can't beat it - all in one!  Gas was pretty expensive considering Atlanta's prices at $3.19 a gallon.  A few days ago it was up around $3.30.

Any case, we filled the tank and headed towards our hike location.  Along the way, we passed Hans Peak (I plan on hiking it before I leave) and hit a dirt, bumpy road that would go another 10 miles.  On that road, we would pass packs of cattle.  I guess I found out first hand what "Open Range" means.  Some were even in the middle of the road and we had to wait till they "felt" like moving over.

We approached the trail head, and no joke, it was about a 70 degree decline right next to a barbed wire fence.  So, now I'm thinking, what has Ryan gotten me into.  Knowing that he's done this trail before - I feel safe.   Though, I thought it would be a cow path towards some nice water falls.  As you'll see by the photos, the dirt trail almost immediately turned into a boulder path and we were hopping from one rock to another.  It wasn't much longer till we had to keep crossing the stream in order to get to an area we could climb where the incline wasn't so bad.  About 45 minutes into our hike, we came upon the first water falls.  At first glance, it looks pretty innocent.  Try jumping it!

Yep, Ryan jumped it and then I jumped it.  I still can't believe I did it!!  I got a great picture of Ryan jumping, but apparently my camera has quite a delay and he didn't get me jumping it the first time.  SO, I jumped it AGAIN!  He has a blurry photo of me on his camera.  Need to get it...  All I could think of before jumping is that saying (I'm paraphrasing) "It's not the amount of breaths you take, it's the moments that take your breath away that count".  This certainly was one of those moments!

We decided to travel on towards the next water fall.  We never found it.  After nearly two and half hours climbing up and down, crossing the stream and crossing back, falling on my hands and knees several times, I called out to Ryan and said, "I can't do this any more!"  He wanted to see if the water fall was just up around the bend, so I sat down on a rock and waited about 15 minutes till he got back.  No luck.  Thus, we headed homeward.  Not before we passed the last water fall again though!  We thought it'd be a great idea to video each other doing the jump.  I dutifully filmed Ryan jumping and then I started up the rock mount to jump and I CHICKENED OUT!  After jumping twice, I thought the third time is a charm and who knows...  So, I bailed and went and sat on the rocks...

While we were there, a little chipmunk befriended us.  He kept scattering here, there and  everywhere around us.  I told Ryan to get some of his granola bar out and let's try to feed him with our hands.  And he did!  He ate right out of Ryan's and my hand!!  Check out the video.  It was the most exciting moment.  Wildlife at its height eating out of my hands.  What a moment!  We decided to name him Solomon and to remember that moment.

Five hours had passed since we started hiking and I was getting famished, so we headed to Wendy's and Taco Bell to get food (about an hour drive).  Headed back to the ranch, where I spent the evening with the women staffers making blankets.  We made one for ourselves and one for charity.  You'll never guess my pattern?!  Bulldawg paws baby!

All in all, today was exciting, challenging, somber and rewarding.  Let's hope all my days off are as great as today was.

Also...  You have to view the photos in album view if you want to see the videos of Solomon the chipmonk and the falls.

Giddy up,

Heather
