Valencia, Spain October 27th through November 3rd

Day 1, Monday October 27th

Today I flew to Spain.  I left apartment at 10:00 in the morning and finally arrived in Spain at 11:00 in the evening. I went with Merima, another American girl in Laon, who is from Minnesota.  We were going to meet up with Anne, who took the train, and stay with Sunny, a friend who is doing a study abroad there.  When I met Merima at the train station, we got a little worried.  Our train was supposed to be leaving in 10 minutes, but there still was no posting where the train was.  Merima asked an agent in the train station, and that's when we realized daylight savings time had already taken place, so we were an hour early.  We went and got a coffee and could not get over the fact no one told us the time was changing.  Oh well, it was better than being an hour late.

So we had to get to the airport in a town called Beauvais.  In order to get to Beauvais from Laon by train, you had to go down to Paris and then back up to Beauvais.  Beauvais is about the same distance from Paris but west of Laon, so we had to travel in a V to get there.  There must be a simpler way, maybe by bus, but we never figured it out.  So we arrived in Beauvais around 2:40.  We had about 3 hours to kill before we could take the bus to the airport.  We checked out the movies theater, which was right next to the train station, but every movie started at 2, so we decided to get a coffee and walk around.  We found a lot of shops, and the cathedral, but we were dragging around our luggage, so we couldn't do much.  Then we walked back to the train station to catch the bus at the airport.  Once we were at the airport, more waiting.  We had to wait to check in, and then we had to wait to board the plane.  We flew Ryanair, and there are no assigned seats, so we were first in line and got seats in the front of the plane.  Ryanair claims to be the "always on time airline," and we were on time, but we figured out their scam; they overestimate the time of the flight so that they can always be on time, very sneaky.  So we finally arrived in Valencia at about 11.  Sunny and Anne met us at the airport and we dropped off our stuff.  We were all hungry, and unfortunately Burger King was the only place still open, so my first Spanish meal was Burger King.  Afterwards we headed back to the apartment and crashed.  Sunny has a huge apartment, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, and a balcony, from which you can see a tiny bit of the Mediterranean.  She gets to stay there by herself because all the other girls in the program chose to live with host families. So we all had our own room, which I was not expecting. So overall it was a long long day of traveling, but it was good to be in Spain.
