We spent the rest of the night camped around the back of the service
station near the bins only to be woken up first thing in the morning
by the bin men nearly running us over! When we woke up it was raining
and crazily this turned to snow. Jennie got us a lift out of the
service station, but first we had to wait for the driver to have a nap
so we hid from the snow in the cafe. This man took us about 50km south
of Madrid and dropped us off at a petrol station. Here we ate lunch
before walking up to the next service station on the motorway which
was a truckers stop. Upon arriving at this station we were very
excited to see lots of trucks and thought this would be an easy place
to hitch from. However, it appeared that the truck drivers were all
asleep so we waited a few hours on a slip road with no luck. Still
there were no truckers so we asked where they all were and were told
they had gone home for the weekend.
We waited at this spot for several more hours until another hitch
group turned up. We thought this group of hitchers, being a two, would
get all potential lifts so we again walked to the next slip onto the
motorway about a km away.
Here we tried to hitch south for another hour before despairing and
writing train station on our hitch board as around 7hours had passed
since we got dropped off! 30mins later we finally got a lift to a
village train station. We then got a train back into central Madrid
and found food and a hostel for the night.
Seeing as Spain had already shut down for the Easter weekend we
assessed our options and due to our tight time schedule we decided
today to spend some time in Madrid then get a train to Algericas and
celebrate Easter day there tomorrow.
