David learned some interesting YELLOWSTONE stories at a Ranger talk he listened to. During one of the early expeditions to the Yellowstone area (before it became a national park in 1872) one of the explorers got separated from his group and then his horse took off with all his supplies.  He then spent 37 days surviving off of thistle root and an occasional bird.  Trying to keep warm one night he slept beside a hot spring.  When he rolled over the edge gave way and dropped him into scalding water and burnt him over much of his body.  Finally a bounty hunter was sent out and found him.  A few years later he was offered the job of being the first park superintendent but he turned it down.  Guess he figured he'd spent enough time in Yellowstone!
