Plzn is only an hour or so away from Waldmunchen, so the trip was nice. We drove through the central city.  I think Plzn is the 2nd largest city in the Czech Republic. Or maybe it's Brno.  The central city is quaint, but it's not that pretty of a city. Very industrial and it has lots of Soviet era block style 12 story apartment buildings.  The Skoda plant is there.  During the communist era, that was one of the main cars used by the eastern block.  They didn't change the design for 20 years probably. But Volkswagon bought them out a few years ago and now they make cool looking modern cars.  Skoda was the butt of many English jokes for years:  "How do you double the value of a Skoda?  Fill it with gas."

But the Pilsner Urquell plant is a different story. It's always had a good reputation.  The tour itself wasn't so fascinating.  Most modern breweries are modern factories with metal tanks. Tourists want to see the old barrels and tools for making barrels, and this tour emphasized that.  The founders derived such a good recipe for beer that it has been attempted to be copied in many countries and breweries.  The main beer in Ecuador is called simply "Pilsner."  It's no coincidence probably that South African Brewing (SAB) owns both companies now, along with Miller Brewing (called Miller SAB now).

Juergen, Steffi, Maximillian, and I downed our sample and said our goodbye's at the Pilzn train station where I'd catch a train to Prague.  Good thing Maxi wasn't driving!  All in all, it was a great trip to Bavaria.  I loved seeing the countryside and small towns.  That's something I usually don't get to see while traveling in other countries since I prefer public transportation to renting a car.  Juergen and Steffi said to say hi to their Madison friends.  And yes, Juergen's still listening to Johnny Cash and Madison's Cash Box Kings.

Pilsen (173K) is the 4th largest Czech city, after Prague (1.285K), Brno (405K) and Ostrava (314K).

Also the Skoda plant which makes cars is in Mladá Boleslav, the one in Pilsen makes locomotives, streetcars and subway waggons. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-07-02/skoda-transportation-may-win-orders-worth-1-billion-update1-.html

Godspeed on next trip!
