(Saturday continued) We go back to the hostel, collect our bags, and carry everything (3 bags each plus 2 prams), mother-duck style to the metro. There we get separated again due to some of us (me) wanting to use the lifts, and others of us (Bruce) wanting to take the stairs. Eventually we reassemble at the station and catch the train to Pireus.
Part way there the track is out so we have to disentangle our selves from our bags and take the stairs (Bruce) and the lifts (me) to go over the railway bridge and down the road to catch a bus, to drag everything on and off the bus and then back on the train further down the road. What a mission.
Finally we get to the port, take the lift (everyone) to use the overbridge to walk mother-duck style to the bus. The bus takes us to the correct port and we walk quickly to the wrong ship. Bruce goes to check we are in the right queue and while he's away I check with a passing Greek official. He assures us we are in the right place. Bruce assures us we are not. We check with the official again (14 minutes to leaving time) and this time another official who can speak English corrects the first and informs us the actual ship is about a mile away on the other side of the gate. Bruce is away again, and he usually takes the mother-load of the bags.
We quickly shoulder even more bags, suitcases and prams and set off as fast as we can around the bay. Bruce sprints ahead and about 8 minutes later (6 minutes to departure time) we are honked at by a bus. I’m thinking that the official felt guilty and sent it after us. The bus picks us up, we pass the panting Bruce and arrive at the tail end of the quickly disappearing queue. Phew.
Now we have a 10 hour sail in front of us. We settle down in front of "Zoolander" (there’s more to life than being ridiculously good looking .... day ... D.A.I.Y.E – day) and laugh till our jaws ache. Gotta love Ben Stiller.
Micah and Selah sleep most of the way, the rest of us catch what we can and I get none and we arrive at Samos at 4 am. Disembark, stow our luggage, wander around till I find a park bench. I lie down and fall promptly asleep while the rest of the fam go to get some breakfast. Breakfast consists of coffee you can stand a spoon up in, omelette with more bacon than egg, and a toasted sandwich instead of toast. I enjoy my sleep.
Later we meet a family who look kinda homeless with their 5 dishevelled kids (no- it wasn’t us) who offer us biscuits, smokes and shoes for my shoeless baby. We accept gratefully and reimburse them with almonds and roller skates. And some of Micah’s grown-out of clothes. The girl who was about 12 also offered us their place to stay the night. I think they liked the fact we had more kids than they did. Everybody here has one child, or more frequently none at all. Anyway, I gave the mum a big hug, and wished I could speak Greek. We had to communicate with sign language which is less than satisfying after a while.
I searched the shops for bread and found none. The only 100 shops that are open are cafes, bars and delicatessens. We bought pies for lunch, followed by a coke which comes with free wifi. So here I am almost up-to-date sans photos.
Love you all, tonight we be in Turkey!!
