My mum, Sylvie and I took a boat over to Rottnest Island just opposite Perth. Unfortunately we had the tail end of Cyclone Clare and it was peeing down with rain. Not such a good idea when we'd hired bikes for 2 days. We cycled from the ferry terminal out to our hostel in an old barracks. On the way we passed a quokka! Quokka's are the island's rat like inhabitants. A dutch explorer on finding the island decided they were giant rats, hence the name, Rott Nest! Fortunately they are a lot cuter than rats although quite annoying. We were sitting in the lounge just minding our own business when a quokka hopped in through the door and started running amok, knocking over glasses, jumping on the table and raiding the bin. We tried to shoo it out but it just gave us a look and kept rumaging. Mum, while washing the dishes let out a little yelp when she found one in the bin! Sylvie and I had to take the bin outside and tip it upside down to remove the little critter! Anyway, the rain went long enough for us to take a little bike ride and visit some gorgeous little beaches! We spent most of the afternoon in the pub playing cards surrounded by all the local wildlife - quokka, peahens and their baby chicks, all wandering around in the pub!

Day 2 we set out for a cycle round the island. Luckily by this time it had stopped raining but was a tad overcast! The rain had brought out the flies so it was quite annoying cycling while they swarmed around us, but the scenery was fantastic so we coped. We cycled right round the island and then to the end. Watched some surfers and then headed back. Sylvie and I went for a swim and a snorkel but there were no fish and it was cold so we headed back into to town and enjoyed some cake!

We got the ferry back to Freo and Toni came to pick us up. We had another evening at Toni's and then it was time to say farewell again....
