Flying in to Lebanon, I was oddly very calm. You would think flying into a strange new country and meeting my in laws would have me unnerved!
The M.E.A (middle east airlines) plane glazed over the water onto the runway, a smooth landing. We taxied on over to the airport. It was only 2 hours from Kuwait to Lebanon. On the plane, they served shish kabobs, curried rice, cheese, pita bread, and fruit. I gathered my carry ons and got off the plane, and followed the people to the baggage. I bought my visa stamp and carried it on to the next visa place. The man interviewing me filling out my visa form asked me many questions. Why am I here, how long will my stay be, who do I know, will I be working, why did I come from Kuwait and so on. He got to the bottom of the form and asked for Mike's parents address and phone number. I searched and searched and apparently was the ONE thing I forgot. We went back and forth for awhile about this. Finally, his strict face eased into a smile and he laughed. "That's okay", he said, "your American". And stamped my passport. "Welcome to Lebanon." Next was luggage claim and customs. I found my luggage, added these to my cart with my carryons and headed towards the customs area. They waved me on through without checking.
Now my nerves chose to make a surprise appearance.
Now I had to walk down an isle with crowds and crowds of people on either side of me, looking for Mike's parents. Never having met them, and only seeing photos, I went slowly looking from face to face.
Finally, at the very end of the isle stood five smiling faces. I waved and made my way on over. Mike's Mom, Dad, little brother and sister, and Nadine were waiting, with flowers.
And here I am. Made it!
