While I was traveling India I had kept in contact with my old job back in Maine. After not working for 8 months I was running a little low on cash and decided to head back. My flight back to Vegas went through Newark so instead getting on the next leg of the flight, I simply jumped off and caught a bus to New England. The next day I had a job, a fully furnished apartment that overlooked the ocean and severe jet lag. It could not have been easier!

I spent the next 4 months doing exactly what I did the summer before. Work, hike, camp, party repeat. The life of a resort worker is tough. So here's my summer in nut shell....

The Job: Waiting tables is waiting tables...not much to report on this. The restaurant once again had record business levels which is good for us servers! Apparently the Pond House is recession proof. People have been coming to the restaurant for years and they are not about to stop now. Lobster stew anyone?

Accommodation: I lived in the small town of Bar Harbor. This little city rocks. It full of bars, restaurants, touristy shops and ice cream parlors. My shared apartment overlooked the ocean and had a kick ass massive deck which were great for barbeque's. The best part about living in town was that I was so close to every thing. No need for a car or even a bike for that matter....I could be anywhere in town within minuets. This was also a bad things because in a resort town there is always a party going on.  The temptation to go out every night was great!

Activities: Since the restaurant in located in Acadia National Park hiking abounds! The park has a perfect mixture of mountainous hiking terrain and rugged ocean coast line. The views from atop the mountains are pretty incredible and there are tons of hidden little beaches if you know where to look. Most days off were spent hiking around exploring different parts of the park I did not see last year. When hurricane Bill hit Maine this year the waves were massive! Luckily enough I had the day off and was able to watch these giants pound the coast. Tons of people came to the park that day to watch mother nature due her worst. A few gawkers got too close to the water and were either smacked around on the rocks or washed in. A family of 4 got taken out to sea and even though we could see them, there was nothing anyone could do. The waves were simply to big and the water was to cold. It was weird to watch them knowing that they were going to die and that we do nothing. In the end the coast guard picked them up and there was only one fatality. Crazy!
Some weekends I would head out with friends to camp. One particular time I caught a massive snapping turtle! This guy had to weigh at least 30 pounds. He could have easily taken off a finger....and to think...I was swimming naked just moments before I caught him!

Peeps: I ran with a good crew this year. We worked hard and we played harder. This is the normal mantra of resort workers. Between the various themed parties (ABC party..Anything But Clothes) and other random excuses we made to drink it was rip roaring summer. Happy hours, quirky dance clubs and house parties were never in short supply. Pat, who worked with me last year (old roommate from Big Sky) came back to be my roommate after hiking the entire 2,200 mile Appalachian trail. Since the trail starts in the south and ends in Maine he was able to say he walked to work from Georgia! Rachael my old roommate from Las Vegas came out with a friend and I was able to take week off from work to show here around. One of the best part of my summer was meeting a wonderful girl named Zoe. We hit it off right away and spent most of our time together. We had so much fun that we planned to meet up after the season to road trip my car up from San Diego.

Conclusion: I love Maine. I always meet the coolest people, the money is great, the work is rewarding, the scenery is epic and the commitment is minute! What's not to love?

Off to check out New York!
