From Sigiriya I had planned to a visit a deserted beach  I read about called Kallcutta. What I had not planned was the  20 check points my bus would encounter getting there.  The war between the LTTE and the Sri Lanakan government is mainly in the north but the closer you get the more check points you encounter.  Check points suck because they involve all men and women getting off the bus to get frisked and have their bags inspected. Old women, children and sometimes tourist gets to stay on.  Half the time I had to stand with them men and the other half  I was told to stay put.  Sometimes checkpoints were only 5 minuets apart!  It took FOREVER!!!!!!  Plus I was standing the whole time because after every check point everyone would switch seats like never ending musical chairs.
When I finally arrived at Batticola,  I found it to be deserted.  The guest house was 3 miles from the beach and looked like a aluminum tool shed.  I decided to check out the beach to see if it was really worth a stay.  After walking forever in the blistering sun I discovered that a military base had been put up right where the beach access point was.    The sun was sapping my energy and I was no mood to continue the hunt so I headed to the shade of a church on the side of the military base.   While I rested, I struck up a conversation with a man raking leaves.   It turned out he was the care taker of that little catholic church and was excited to talk to a foreigner! (that's me)  He showed me where the tsunami had struck the church and how high the water mark was.  He then gave me a tour around the skeletal structure which was basically a hollow concrete building. After chatting for awhile he offered to give me a ride back into town on the back of his bike.  This guy was small and old but he hauled my ass all the way  for free!  What a nice guy!
I caught the next bus outta there! I was on my way to Arugum Bay which I thought was going to be alot like Hikadwa.  This bus stopped for everyone and their mother!  Not only that but there were a bijjllion more check points!  This was one of the longest travel days yet!  A bus that goes no where, military check points every 4 miles and 100 degree heat.  Shoot me in the head!  One pleasant part of the trip was a good looking girl sitting next to me and telling me I was beautiful.  I gotta admit I don't get that much... maybe handsome and only then if its dark and that person is drinking heavily...but beautiful?  at 100 degrees...... I'll take it!  I chatted with her awhile before she went back to her friends...the next couple of hours every time I looked back she was gazing at me with pure admiration.
I had to change buses one last time to get to my final destination.  As I roamed around the bus station I was told that there were no more buses going that day, so I found the nearest cheapest place to sleep.  My bedroom was located in the bar, 5 feet from a TV blaring Tamil love songs. I knew this was not a good set up but I was comforted by a sign that said the bar closed at 10 p.m.   I could live with that.   Around 11 p.m. I awoke to hear the sound of  2 Americans going at it like Bunny's( smack my ass!)   Before I was fully awake, I thought "thats funny.... I didn't see any other tourist around"   Then as the sound became louder and more explicit I came to realize that all the guys outside my room were watching hardcore porn!  The funny part is that they were not trying to be discreet,  the volume was turned all the way up!  "Oh brother" I thought and I turned my  Ipod up.    About an hour later I woke up again because my fan had stopped working and I was boiling!  I opened up my door to get some help and both front desk men were just getting out of the shower...hmmmmmmmmmmm.....Tapioca anyone?
The next day since I was in a town that is off the beaten track I decided to check it out.  People would come up to me to either stare, ask what country or to actually chat.  It was alot of fun!.   I watched some fishermen cast their nets then I walked to a part of town that got hammered by the Tsunami and found a temple that broke apart from the wave. After this I had a coffee a resort that had a tsunami photo album.  I thought the pictures were really not that impressive until I got to the end and found photos of dead bodies covered by sheets. Damn!
Anyfart,  after exploring that town I caught the next bus out! Only 10 more check points to go!
