The state of Michigan is broken up into two peninsulas - the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. They are connected together by the Mackinac Bridge. Most people in Michigan live in the lower peninsula (civilized part) to better understand the people that voluntarily live in the U.P here are some quotes:
"In winter we shovel snow and in summer we swat mosquitoes. During the spring and fall we rest up for swatting and shoveling".---Peter Oikarinen's reply to the often-asked question of Yoopers, "What do you people do up there?" 1987---
What Da Heck Is A Yooper?
The people that live in the Upper Peninsula or the U.P. are called "Yoopers" and are proud of it
So now you have a little taste of what the UP is all about. All I knew is that Pat was excited to camp there because of its remote location. As you can tell from the pictures Yooperland is an actual tourist trap on the side of the road. Of course we stopped because we had nothing but time and they had the world's largest rifle and chainsaw!
After camping on some random lake and trying to hunt deer with frisbee discs we decided to head down to Travers City where a buddy lives. Since the NBA finals were on and it was getting dark we decided that we needed to find a spot to pitch up and watch the game. Luckily the first random, backwoods bar had the game and upon asking where we could camp - one of the bar patrons (Schmitty) said we could camp in his yard which was across the road. Two birds with one stone!
Schmitty ended up getting so drunk that he fell off his stool and was drooling so we left without him and slept on his porch.
All in all a good U.P experience!
