Sick of my life in Vegas (shitty jobs) I was desperate to get out and travel again.  Upon hearing that my friend Pat (from Big Sky) and Dave McPune were driving to the east coast ( at the peak of gas prices)  I readily excepted their invitation for this massive road trip.  Since I was in Vegas and they were in Kansas, I flew to South Dakota to meet them.
My plan was to either get a job somewhere along the east coast or fly out to India from New York.   I was open to any opportunity as long as it did not involve Las Vegas.  Arriving in South Dakota, I was met by Pat and Dave and we zoomed off to the famous city of Sturgis to stay with another Big Sky friend (Ted).  We used Sturgis as a base camp for a couple of days to explore the surrounding areas such as Mount Rushmore.  It was also here that we met up with Dave's friend who got us into the idea of playing frisbee golf.  Upon playing a course in in town we decided to google courses across the U.S so that we could hit them up as we drove across the country.
3 things define the road trip, the first would be frisbee golf (Frolf), we played in every state we drove across.  We played so much that I tore a rotator cuff in my shoulder.  As you may notice I have inserted frisbee pictures in almost every entry because we really did play all the freakin time! The second thing was that we vowed never to pay for camping.  Why pay?  Many of these campground cost just as much as a hotel and what the hell do you get? A piece of dirt?  Rubbish!!!  Many times we would find random roads and drive until we found a suitable site and pitch up. Lastly, we decided to take photos by all the roadside attractions that claimed they had the World's Largest: chainsaw; rifle; pheasant; walleye...the list goes on.
One last thing to mention about South Dakota is Wall Drug.  If you have ever driven I-90 across S.D. you can't miss it.  Before you get to Wall Drug you pass at least 30 crazy looking signs advertising the place.   The build up is so great that just passing it without pulling in would be a crime.  Of course its a tourist trap but there is alot to look at and photo ops to break up the painfully boring drive across the S.D. plains.
I almost forgot to mention the Badlands, this is the whole reason I flew to S.D.   As you can tell from the pictures, the Badlands is a pretty sweet National Park.  As we drove through the park we went for random hikes, played frisbee (as a sparrow dived bombed our disc) and checked out the wildlife.   The Badlands are home to the largest mixed grass prairies in the National Park System. Wildlife roams the park's boundaries as well: Bison, pronghorn, mule and whitetail deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, butterflies, turtles, snakes, bluebirds, vultures, eagles and hawks are just some of the wildlife that can often be seen by visitors. (NPS website)
Well that does it for South Dakota.  Since we spent a couple of days in each state, I have decided to write one entry for that whole state.  Therefore many of these future entries encompass a couple days of camping, frisbee and Taco Bell which he hit in every state!
