´Essouira´ means well designed. We thought it would be nice to stay by the beach for a few days to escape the cities. As it happens the ´alizee´ (strong coastal wind) kinda kept us away most of the time. It is Morocco´s best known windsurfing place. The other thing Essouira is famous for is being in movies. It´s featured in Kingdom of Heaven and Orson Welles' adaptation of Othello. We were thinking that we´d have a great time on the beach and in the sun relaxing, but we actually spent most of the time wandering around the Medina. I finally got the balls up to go shopping one night and did some reasonably successful bartering. Apart from the wind keeping us away we witnessed an old man pooping by the water (next to some other human poop) and noticed the ocean wasn´t looking too clean (quite brown actually). We took some nice strolls along the beach though...Although we couldn´t find any cheapo rooms we did finally find a place that served us food at local prices. We got 2 bowls of soup, a bread roll and a plate of fries for 6dh which is 60 Euro cents. Yipee!
