After an uncomfortable night bus we arrived in the beautiful white city and the official captital of Bolivia, Sucre. It is such a lovely city but unfotunately it is higher up in altitude so return of the headache and ear popping it was. The first day there, even though I was quite sure I was a zombie,I decided to explore the city seeing as we were practically right next door to the Plaza 25 de Mayo (center square). There was the usual assortment of gorgeous colonial (thanks to the Spanish) government buildings (which are now used only for local government since La Paz became the de facto capital)and the main cathedral. Then we drove a bit out of town to this enchanting castle, however, since they are currently restoring the interior we coulnd´t go inside but we did peek in the windows and it was just lovely with beautiful tile floors, ornate ceilings and marble fireplaces. We then went to the Convento de San Felipe Neri, a stunning convent with great rooftop views of the city. I also visited the Ethnographic and Folklore musuem whose highlight was the large assortment of Carnival masks. And I also went to the Indigenous Museum which was quite the little gem and if by chance you ever make it to Sucre I highly recommend it. It showcased the different weavings of the Tarabuco and the Jalq´a cultures. The musuem was packed with examples of both the distinct styles displaying them chronologically right up until the present day. The Tarabuco culture weavings are quite colourful and intricate depicting daily life interspresed with bands of rhombuses whereas the Jalq´a weavings only used red and black and had designs of animals and devil like figures. Then on Sunday we took the trek out to Tarabuco where they hold a market every Sunday, so we got to see all the lovely intricate weavings. I still can´t imagine how they possibly are able to make them.
