Tongariro Crossing-part 1
Opgestaan om 05 u. Ontbeten, picknick en rugzak klaargemaakt. Een half uurtje rijden tot Parking Ketetahi Rd. op 755 m hoogte, waar we de tocht starten. Het weer is nog slechter dan gisteren. Maar de miezerige regen houdt ons niet tegen, we kunnen toch moeilijk een hele dag aan de backpackers blijven rondhangen, onze regenjassen moeten ons maar droog weten te houden!

Bij het vertrek om 6u45 is het nog half duister en het eerste uur voert het mooi aangelegde pad ons omhoog doorheen weelderig regenwoud. Op 1055 m laten we het woud achter ons en krijgen we alpiene vegetatie voorgeschoteld. Spijtig blijft het zicht beperkt tot enkele meters en kunnen we niet ten volle genieten van de mooie uitzichten.
Het blijft maar regenen, maar door het stappen krijgen we het toch warm. We doen een spelletje 'jas aan, jas uit' tijdens de korte regenpauzes!
We zetten er al stijgend flink de pas in, passeren op 1450 m hoogte Ketetahi berghut en komen wat later aan het grote ‘Blue Lake’, dat er echter grauwgrijs uitziet. Vervolgens dalen we af naar het zadel gelegen tussen de vulkanen Mt Tongariro en Mt Ngauruhoe. Nog wat doorstappen en we bereiken de zeer fotogenieke ‘Emerald Lakes’, postkaart waardig!
Vanaf hier moeten we fors klimmen doorheen zwarte lava-aarde. Ons opmerkzaam reukorgaan neemt een typische zwaveldampgeur waar. Speciaal aan het Tongariro NP is dat de vulkanen nog actief zijn!

Als je de crossing in 1 richting wil doen, vervolg je vanaf hier de weg naar de parking aan de Mangatepopo Rd, waarbij je voorbij Mangatepopo Hut komt. Wij zullen vanaf hier rechtsomkeer maken, maar eerst wagen we nog een beklimming naar de top van de Tongariro vulkaan, de noordelijkste van het Central Plateau. Na 40 minuten stijgen en stappen over een kam waar geen eind aan lijkt te komen staan we om 10u45 op de in mist en regen gehulde top. Tja, spijtig, van de mist, veel uitzicht hebben we niet, enkel de voldoening van boven te staan!
Vanaf hier beginnen we aan het tweede deel van onze tocht, vulkaan Tongariro terug afdalen en dan dezelfde weg terug richting Parking Ketetahi Rd.

weetje: Het Tongariro Nationaal Park, sinds 1991 UNESCO Werelderfgoed, is 786 km2 groot. Delen van de film ‘The Lord of the Rings’ zijn hier gefilmd.

The Tongariro area was designated a National Park on 23rd September 1887. Te Heuheu, Paramount Chief of the Ngati Tuiwharetoa people, gifted 2,630ha of the central volcano area to the New Zealand Government, including the summits of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. His move secured the mountains for all people, for all time. In 1990 the park was recognised as a World Heritaghe Site for its outstanding natural value.
The name Tongariro originally covered the three mountains of the park (Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu) and comes from tonga (south wind) and riro (carried away). Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu have all erupted in recent times.
One of the best one day tracks in the country is the traverse of Mount Tongariro, known as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The area is extremely popular with trampers during the day.
Winding its way over Mt Tongariro and around Mt Ngauruhoe is the Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of the Great Walks of New Zealand.
Established in 1887, Tongariro was the first national park in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. It is also a dual World Heritage area, a status which recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.
From herb fields to forests, from tranquil lakes to desert-like plateau and active volcanoes,Tongariro has them all!

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience a cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes (these three lakes fill old explosion pits; their brilliant colouring is caused by minerals washed down from the thermal area of Red Crater) and magnificent views.
The whole Alpine Crossing spans the length of about 17 Ks and takes about 7-9 hours (it depends of your fitness). Most trampers start at the Mangatepopo Car Park and walk over towards the Ketetahi road end. This is the easiest way as this will minimise the climbing involved.
But, you need to arrange transport to drop you at the beginning of the track and pick you up at the end of the day.
But that's what we do not want to do, we'd like to use our own car.
So, what option do we have? We decide to drive with our car to Ketetahi Car park, do the tramp till Red Crater with an ascent to Mt Tongariro's peak (1967m) and then return to Ketetahi Car park.
Tomorrow we will start at Mangatepopo Car Park, walk to South crater, ascent Mt Ngauruhoe (2287m) and return to Mangatepopo Car Park.
