Where I stayed
Jumped on a moto and checked out a few guesthouses & ended up at the Holiday Hotel & got an aircon room for $14 a night.
Went out walking to explore the town & headed for he riverfront . French colonial buildings line the streets of the Sangker River & a couple have been beautifully restored. The river is quite low & everywhere is dry & dusty.
Walked a long way in the heat of the middle of the day, in really high humidity with sweat running off me. A couple of times it sprinkled rain - I was hoping it would pour just to cool down. Walked past the old French Governers building to the Riverside Balcony restaurant. It is a lovely old wooden house overlooking the river but it wasn't open till 4pm.
Heading back to the main part of town would have loved to jump on the back of a moto but when you finally want one they are never around!! Passed heaps of kids swimming in the river that would call out "hello"
Made it to a lovely cafe called Gecko & s upstairs on the balcony overlooking another restored french building with their steep shingle roof. After cooling down with a drink I put my head on the table & fell asleep! Literally couldn't move for the next 2 hours as I was so tired.
By 4pm felt I could face the heat again as it was cooling down. Hired a bike downstairs for $1 & rode around town on the other side of the river as well as around the markets. People very friendly - kids calling out & a boy rode beside me & chatted to practice his english.
Back to Geckos I booked my bus ticket to PP on the "luxury bus" for $7!!! Early dinner of coke & chips & back to my nice air con room for an early night
