We stayed in Sapphire for 2 days to go fossicking or "fossipicking" as Anouck calls it. The kids had a ball sifting through their bucket absolutely convinced that they would dig up the biggest emerald ever found. They found a lot of little ones but none that would make us rich beyond our imagination...unfortunately. It was however a lot of fun for the kids. The place we stayed at was absolutely beautiful. Well maintained and with a lot of little patio's to have lunch or dinner around an open fire. The main attraction at the park for the kids were the lorikeets which we more than happy to put up a performance in return for some breadcrumbs.
On the second day we went over to a place called Willow's gemfields for the real experience. Similar to Sapphire and Rubyvale, the town looked even more like a ghost town with ramshackle sheds where people have been digging up their gardens in search for the million dollar gemstone. We even found Greg's secret hideaway!!!
So far so good. The trip is everything we expected and more although a bit colder especially at night. We are very much looking forward to a 20 degree night sleep on the Cape.
Stay tuned for more if we get internet as the phone coverage and internet availability is getting fewer and far between.
