A direct bus brought us from Ella to Tangalla and after some research in our Lonely Planet we got a tuk-tuk to the few guesthouses that are further up on the more isolated and supposedly nicer part of the beach. However, as they have been privileged with a shout out in the LP they think they can get away with tripling their prices. After a rather pointless hunt we decided to head back to the busier part and 'less clean' beach as the LP states. This is where we got the biggest room we have ever had and it was nice. The beach was clean and practically deserted and there were restaurants along the front which the other beach lacked.

The sea is pretty rough in Tangalla but the guy (Chamee) who worked at our guesthouse said it was fine to swim in and came out with us. After being pulled under and dragged about ten metres toward the shore, James also having suffered the same we decided to call it a day much to the amusement to Chamee who was like Echo the dolphin

After showering off about a tonne of sand we were about to hunt around for somewhere to eat, but Chamee gave us the menu as we passed so we felt obliged to eat at our guesthouse, even though my first concern was that this young chap worked there on his own so I didn’t know how he was going to manage to cook Sri Lankan curry. He called the troops around when we ordered (two other guys) and off they went to work....well kind of. Chatted for 30 minutes, and then went off on a motorbike (to see his friend in hospital allegedly) even though I had a feeling he had someone else cooking it and he was going to come back with a take-away style meal. I was wrong again, they had been shopping and they were just beginning to cook our food an hour after we ordered. The only reason we weren’t so impatient was because we sat on the beach and watched a bright orange full moon light up the sea and sky. Two and a half hours later food was served, and to be fair to the guys it was definitely the best Sri Lankan curry we had had so far, so we didn’t much mind the wait. Tangalla was a really nice place, very chilled and that’s just what we did. Next stop – Polhena.

Best Wishes
