Hi Everyone,
Last weekend was a real adventure. After a week with the little campers I was definately ready for a road trip. We were invited to stay with one of the American members of staff in her family's cabin in Lake Tahoe. We didn't leave until 7pm and anticipated that it would take about three hours to get there. The traffic, however was a nightmare - everyone seemed to be escaping North for the weekend. We got lost many, many times but we sang and laughed our way through 6 hours of driving through North East California (nearly ending up in Reno) and arrived at 1:30 in the morning. The cabin was in the middle of nowhere - I am amazed that we found it at all. On the journey there I experienced one of those near perfect moments of happiness. We were driving along the highway through Sacramento, it was about 9pm and it was getting pretty dark, there were big neon signs on either side of the road - very american - motels, casinos, fast food joints etc. We were singing along to something or other on the i-pod and it was a knock your socks off happy moment. The friends I have made here are truely amazing and it reminded me how lucky I am to have met them but also how lucky I am to have the friends and family that I do back home too. The people in my life make feel so blessed.
Anyway, we joined the house party a little late but made the most of it nonetheless. Lauren (from Australia), Skeeter and I took some bikes out to the Lake at 5am and watched the sun come up, something I hadn't done in a very long time, it was beautiful. Cycling back to the cabin through the redwoods at dawn with the mountains on either side and Lake Tahoe behind me was one of the most exhilarating moments of my whole life - I have rarely felt so glad to be alive. I had a few revelations last week actually and all of them have enhanced my trip tenfold. On Saturday after a few hours sleep we went rafting down the Truckie Rive which is not as intrepid as it might sound. There were some truely hilarious moments, the funniest involved Jemma being thrown off the raft and trying to scramble back into the raft with no dignity whatsoever. On Sunday we went to see the San fransisco Giants play the San Deigo Padres - didn't have a skoobie what was happening but thge people watching was good. This week I had the Pinecones again, 19 of them. They were alot of fun. This weekend Ian is here in San Fransisco - he is taking a nap just now to recover from the flight. Today we went to Haights Ashbury - famous hippie hangout in the '60's and home to the Grateful Dead. I will try and put some more photos on soon - we had to buy a new camera today as I got the other one full of sand while surfing.
Love to you all
Heather
