After two late nights in a row we slept in this morning. Before breakfast we spoke to Helen and Amelia via Skype which was great. We tried to explain the time difference between Australia an France and the different seasons we are experiencing to Amelia. Then after our croissant and coffee breakfast we set off for Mont Saint Michel just over the Brittany border in Normandy.
We had visited here 15 years ago and while the Mont remains the same - narrow streets, lots of steps and hundreds of tourists, the land and water surrounding it has changed quite considerably. To account for the large variation in the tides that occur here, major works have taken place and when completed access to the monastery will be on a raised roadway on a bus, with the car park some kilometres away.
Along the way we had a picnic lunch beside the river. Unfortunately the weather was overcast and quite cool today so the photos are not the best.
Back to Nelly's about 6pm to help prepare dinner - moules and frites ie mussels and chips. Col helped with the chips as the mussels recipe is a secret. When the meal began we had mini quiches as the 'aperitif', then a selection of cold seafood including prawns, sea snails and crab claws. Then the mussels and chips, followed by a cheese platter and salad and then lemon meringue pie and ice-cream! Nelly had spent the day cooking while we had been out sightseeing. All courses were served with matching beautiful wines. What we thought would be a simple Sunday night meal turned out to be yet another feast. Thank you Nelly!
Carole then entertained us by playing the clarinet before we viewed the photos of their trip to Oz earlier in the year when we hosted them as Couchsurfers.
Another late night and another lovely day with great company and hospitality.
