...The world of China was not the bleak industrial wasteland I had been led to expect and Kunming, compared to Kolkata, was a thing of dreams. Bins were present, streets were clean, skies were blue and nobody had immediately tried to rip me off. I hung around Kunming for a few days trying to work out what the hell my plan was for this country. I remember concocting a hare brained scheme to head North, cross into Mongolia and hunt down the shortest man alive. Since then however, I've learned that he has not only died, but since been replaced by an even shorter man whom I'd apparently already met...

Anyway, I ended up staying another week or so in Kunming courtesy of a Swedish/Chinese couple I met by accident one day. Hanmei was a small hyperactive borderline psychopath and Carl was a laid back Swede who she was quickly driving mad.

After this while had passed, the three of us purchased some train tickets and headed on up to Hanmei’s hometown of Dali for somesort of holiday celebration...
