Got to Aleppy (Alappuzha) only a short while later than promised. Found somewhere to live for 2 days (a very nice guesthouse with abominable internet called the Dream Nest). It was raining again so I bought myself a couple of beers from the seedy alcohol shop and retreated back to the guesthouse to test my knowledge of the hindu religion on the proprieter.

The next day I found a couple of guys with a canoe and paid them to ferry me around the Kerelan backwaters. I met their families, saw some extremely labour intensive fishing, was taken to a crap temple and given some weird drink, was shown a tree that can kill you and some paddy fields.

After a bit we stopped for lunch, where I refused to eat the raw chicken I was served ("if I eat this I will die" I tried to explain to him). The waiter guy took it back and in an apparent act of defiance on the part of the chef, returned it incinerated a short while later. After lunch I saw a bunch of people bathing, doing laundry and washing dishes in the same stretch of dirty canal. Then I bought a coconut and made friends with a couple of eagles (Brahminy Kites) before having a go at piloting the vessel home.

In the evening I bumped into a german girl who happened to be staying at the dream nest, so we bought some rum and went home for some tunes and a drink. In the morning we checked out and caught ourselves a boat to (cult of) Amma Ashram, where I was told I could have food and a bed for 150 Rupees a night...
