We wanted to continue down to Sydney because there was not much more we wanted to see on the east coast. Since it's Christmas and New Years going on it's really busy in Sydney and almost impossible to find accommodation. We decided to go to the Blue Mountains a 2h train ride to the west of Sydney before New Years instead of after that was the plan from the beginning.
We got of the 12h long night bus in Sydney early in the morning on the 29th. We spent the day in Sydney just walking around. We had a look in the city and in the Darling Harbour. Heidi, Gail, Morten and many more exchange students from Adelaide were already here and it was Gail's last day so we went to their hostel and had lunch and said good bye to her. Thereafter we walked back to the train station and jumped on the train to Katoomba where we are staying for two nights before we go back to Sydney for the New Years celebrations.
Katoomba is a small town close to many of the attractions in the Blue Mountains. I was surprised how much cooler it was here then in Sydney. I left sweating in shorts and t-shirt and ended up freezing when I stepped out of the train. The hostel we stayed at was really nice but the beds here were just crap. The base was just regular planks and not strong enough. When I was sitting on my knees making the bed I cracked one so there were a hole just where my bum was. I talked to another guest at the hostel and he had done the same thing.
The next day was our only full day here. We started by walking to the Three Sisters. Then we walked down the stairs and they were much longer than I thought. It took us forever because there were so many slow people there and the stair was narrow. Most people only walked down to the sisters so after that is were better. Down at the base we did a little walk in the forest before we turned around and walked to the scenic railway. It's the steepest incline railway in the world and the steepest incline is 52 degrees. It was cool but not as exiting as I had hoped it would be. If I was down there again I would take the stairs just for the sake of have walked back up. When we got back to Katoomba we went to Coles to buy food and drinks for tomorrow and then we went back to the hostel, watched a movie and had an early nights sleep.
Next morning we were taking a train at 7:00 in the morning but when we wanted to check out there were no one in the reception until 9:00 in the morning. We should have done the check out the day before but we did not think about that at all. We could just leave but then we would have lost our key deposit. The kitchen was also locked and we couldn't leave without or food and drinks but luckily the receptionist shows up just about when we needed to leave and we got our stuff.
