drove to Gisborne last night after leaving rotorua and stayed at a place called tolaga bay. got up early for the sunrise as gisborne is the first city in the world to welcome the new day in. it was a little cloudy but still pretty impressive. got a few nice pics anyway (as usual!)
then we drove down to a place called whangara just outside gisborne. it took a little while to find due to the lack of sign posts, and its just a tiny coastal village but we found it. Its where Whale Rider was filed and i studied the film at uni and loved it so we were really keen to find the place. alot of it was private land so we couldnt get up to the meeting house and we couldnt afford to do the tour they have but it was still worth it to see the locations.
its ANZAC day today (25th April) which is to commemerate the members of the australian and new zealand army corps landing in gallipoli in WWI, and everything is closed until 1pm, so there wasnt much to do in gisborne so we decided to drive up to whakatane where we had some lunch and then went swimming. dorve further up the coast to spend the night.
