After an uneventful time in smelly Rotorua - apart from having to spend time waiting around for the car to pass its warrant of fitness (like an MOT) we headed off up to the Coromandel Peninsula, which I had been informed was a beautiful place. So I had high hopes for blue skies, white sand and blue seas with a nice bit of sunshine thrown in. We arrived late in the afternoon in Thames and decided to stay here overnight, seemed like a nice little town, and there was going to be a market on there the next morning. So we stayed in a hostel which had been converted from an old house - apparently it's haunted but luckily didn't experience any of that.
The market was a bit dirge, but we picked up some cheap veg, always good, then headed off to Whitianga and the prospect of some beach action. The weather wasn't the best as we drove off, but luckily it picked up the closer we got to Whitianga so that by the time we arrived it was full on sunshine, superb!!!
We headed straight to the beach, where I was quickly reminded of the joy of sandflies, those horrible little black flies that seem to love to bit me. ARGH is all I can say on that front, we cut the time short spent at the beach as I had enough of the blighters.
Whitianga is a cool place, with some awesome boats moored on the harbour - there's some really nice restaurants there, but they charge extortionate prices as all the rich dudes go there for holidays and to splash their cash, not really a place for the budget backpacker to eat out........... Some great apartments and houses going up there at the mo though; I'll have to get myself back there when I make my millions so that I can buy myself a nice bach..............
