What a boss day!! Rob (Paul's mate) took us out on the sounds for a day on the boat - the day started with us sat in the boat being towed down the road along to the launch jetty - I felt really rich!! Then the boat was launched and we were out along the water. The water was calm at first, but as we got further out and into the open sea it started to get a bit windy and choppy.. Paul was sat at the back of the boat so he was getting well wind swept! And as the sea was choppy the boat was being bashed all over the place, and we were being bounced out of our seats, not the most comfortable of rides but I found it quite fun actually!
After about a 40 min ride we reached the point where Rob said there was good fishing - he was expecting there to be mainly blue cod there, which I thought was good - everything that we caught we were gonna eat that night (as long as it was big enough)....
So Rob showed us how to use the fishing rods, and got the bait out that we were gonna use - which was dead squid. Soon as Anna-Marie saw the squid and the fish hooks, she said 'I can't do this!!' I was a little apprehensive, but after cutting up the squid and putting on the hook for the first time I thought easy! I can do this! So we were all in the water with our bait, and then I got the first fish! It was only a small one, but I was struggling to hold it still whilst I got the hook out of its mouth.. I felt like I was ripping its mouth to shreds yanking away on the hook, and there was blood all over it's little head... So had to get help from Rob to get the hook out, and then the fish was plopped back into the sea because it wasn't big enough.
We each had some luck in catching the cod, but it was all too small. Until I got the first one that finally made the grade and was big enough to keep! Yay!! I was surprised at how much fun I had fishing - the only thing I found tough was holding onto the fish long enough to be able to take the hook out; especially when the hook was through the fish eyes, that was disgusting and there was no way I was gonna do that! We caught another type of fish besides the blue cod - red gurnard. Bizarre things these we, orange coloured and with some weird defensive things that come out when you try to grab them..
Check out this link for a piccie of one:

Then check this one out for the weird defense thing:

The day was heaps of fun, and eating the fish afterwards was delicious - the gurnard were well tasty! We had them breadcrumbed and then barbequed with some kumara too - delicious!
