Thank god - sun again!! Me and Lee arrived in Nelson in the afternoon to be greeted by a lovely day. No wind either, which seemed a little unusual after windy Wellington. When we got off the bus we were confronted by about 6 different people from backpacker hostels trying to get us to stay in their hostel, each one offering something a little different, but we decided in the end to go for the one that had free breakfast and then something free each evening; that evening it was ice cream and hot chocolate. Yum.
So we jumped on the minibus, me looking completely ridiculous with my 65 litre rucksack with scarf and coat attached, a 25litre wheelie suitcase, and then a little bag and another 10 litre bag... Hmm, I seemed to have acquired shit loads of stuff along the way somehow...
The hostel seemed pretty laid back - no tv which is probably a good thing, and loads of space outside to relax in the sun.
I decided that I would either hire or buy a car to see the South Island - it's just too expensive doing it all by bus and as there is 3 of us it should work out cheaper.... So I had a little look in the hostel at the notice board and spotted one that was for sale for $900 - a 1985 Nissan Sunny, which apparently a granny had owned, and it had only done 120,000km, not a lot at all for a 20 year old car.. Well it sounded too good to be true, and I noticed that the date it had been put on the board was the 29/09 so ages ago, and I didn't think it would still be for sale... But it turned out that it actually belonged to the guy that was cleaning Kim's hostel, and it was still for sale! So I had a look at it, pretending that I knew a bit about cars - asking stuff about rust on the chassis and the engine size, fuel consumption and stuff, the guy who was selling it probably guessed I was talking a load of shite, but went along with it anyway! I took it out for a little test drive - even though it was an automatic it was ok to drive, and I decided to buy it, but to act cool in front of the guy, saying I may contact him in a few days....
Well I bought it a couple of days later, paying $850 for it - bargain!! Considering that is about 350 English pounds!!
So we're planning to go on a road trip all around the South Island, and then I'm gonna go back up to Wellington to meet Anna-Marie and Paul so I can show them the sights and why I love the place so much!
