After the apple picking I went on a bit of a road trip with some guys I'd met on the orchard; the first place I went was Taupo, where you can do the cheapest sky dive in the world!! So I signed up for it, but just my luck, I had all the gear on - the jumpsuit and the works; just went to get on the plane, whacked my head (which hurt!!) and then clouds came over the jump site. Damn New Zealand weather! So couldn't do a dive that day, and then the next day I woke up to rain. Fingers crossed I'm gonna go back there at some stage, $159 for a skydive is a bloody bargain!! 45 second freefall!!!! Yay!! And the view from the plane should be awesome. Can't wait for that.

Next it was on to Rotorua, the stinkiest place in the world - no joke! The thermal activity in the region means that the place stinks of sulphur - imagine opening 5 rotten eggs and then sticking your face in them - that's how bad it smelt!! Didn't stay there long, surprisingly! They do have some great geysers and stuff there, the hot springs are pretty cool too, but just a little too smelly.
Next stop was Mt Maunganui - a fantastic place in the Bay of Plenty on the north coast of the north island. It's a top place for surfers, so it's a really laid back kind of place and the beach is fantastic. I saw people surfing for the first time, so excited, and I really want to try it myself!! Think I may get some surf lessons in the summer. We stayed in Maunganui for a few days, Emerson and AJ opting to sleep in their cars, and me going for the luxury option and sleeping in a hostel. Then we headed to another surfy place called Raglan, the waves were huge there!! It was a really small town, but apparently very famous on the surfing circuit. As it was just out of summer time I couldn't get surfing lessons, which I was a bit gutted about, but will defo try to get lessons later in the year. Only bad thing about the place was that I got bitten by loads of sand flies, the damn things get everywhere.
We had planned to head onto Mt Taranaki and New Plymouth next, but had a little mishap on the way: Emerson skidded on the road and damaged his car door, doh!!! We had to stick around in Hamilton and wait for it to be fixed, so that was another town ticked off on my list of the North Island, but I wasn't overly impressed with the place....
The route to Wellington from Hamilton went through the Tongariro National Park, where the mountains are that they filmed loads of Lord of the Rings - Mt Doom is Mt Ruapehu, which I could kind of see, but it was getting a bit dark - mind you that is probably the best light to view it in, to give the true Mt Doom effect.....
The roads to Welly were really bendy, and AJ thought he was Colin McRae; I was just sat in his car gripping the side of the door and laughing nervously through most of the journey... It got a little hairy but I'm here in one piece, so it's all good!!!
