I was off to Hvar today, apparently it is the place to be right now, and is also the sunniest of all the Croatian islands. I got up early to make sure I got a ticket for the catamaran boat, I haven't had a lie-in past about 8.30am yet, urgh.
Ticket purchased, then it was a short wait by the harbour for the boat. Seated comfortably on the boat, it was rocking quite a bit and I was thinking that we were in for a rough ride. Thankfully though it was actually quite soothing and even sent me off to sleep, that is until I woke myself up with my snoring, whoops.
The boat pulled up at Hvar town and it was like a rugby scrum trying to get off, the harbour was quite narrow, and I had visions of a nasty fall into the sea..... I had a series of directions to follow once getting to Hvar town to find my hostel, and what a surprise, loads more steps and hills. Marvellous. Managed to get there ok, although rather sweaty, so a quick change of clothing and off to explore. There are no proper beaches here as such, a couple of tiny pebble ones and then mainly just large rocks. People don't seem to mind though, it seemed to be the norm to be purched on a jagged rock inches away from the sea. No thanks. I chose a little hill, which also meant I had a great vantage point for watching the boats and all the jammy people having fun on them. I started to realise quickly that I was probably the most pale and pasty person in about 100 miles, and that's me with a tan. These people are so ridiculously brown.
Hvar is ok, but to be honest, I don't see what all the fuss is about, well unless you have an expensive boat and a penchant for being a complete poser with it. I suppose it was good to see it first hand, and it was nice to get to one of the Croatian islands, but one night was definately enough, and I was starting to feel rather scruffy too compared to all the rich people wandering around.... Time to move on...
