We were off to the Vatican amongst other things today, but not the Sistine chapel - the queue was a complete nightmare!  We had a mosey around St Peters Sq, then decided to go into St Peter's Basilica, which was actually free to get into.  The only restriction was making sure shoulders were covered and trousers / skirts were knee length.... so Nicola improvised with a spare pair of trousers that Stefan had in his bag, making a lovely wrap, nice action on that!!  I wasn't expecting the Basilica to be so amazing, as the queue was small to get in, and it was free..... but it really left me speechless and in awe; it was absolutely huge and filled with paintings and statues of religious icons and other artefacts.  I was stunned into silence for at least a few minutes, a rare occurence.  After a good look around, we headed back out and into some nearby souvenir shops on the lookout for a Virgin Mary flicknife for my sister and some rosary beads for my mum.... We saw lots of things with the pope on, but strangely Pope JP and not the new one, they musn't like him as much.  I drew a blank though on the rosary beads, they did have some but they were really tacky, and the half way decent ones were very expensive.  Sorry mum.
We then got fed and watered and headed to see the Colloseum for a quick look around - we were saving actually going in it for the last day in Rome.  Fortunately, it was a quick hop on the metro and one change, then we were there.  As soon as you leave the metro station, you can see it there, huge in front of you.  It is a real shame that they haven't preserved it as well as some of the other old buildings in Rome, I think it would have been awesome if they had.  Ah well, it still does look pretty awesome from the outside.
We started to flag a little and decided it was time to head back to the campsite to soak our feet in the pool, so off we went, Stu almost getting pickpocketed by some bint on the bus on the way, not good.
After refreshing, we headed off into Rome to see it lit up at night, but because of the damn public transport we could only stay out for about an hour and a half, not enough time to get around and see the main attractions lit up at night, in fact we only saw the Trevi fountain, and it was a bit disappointing really.
