Wet, cold and closed in when we left Waterton Lakes for what was to be a long day devoted to making miles (360) to Radium Hot Springs. But it was not without its drama, the Kawasaki brothers had found the front tyre on Leigh's bike was wearing badly and was now almost completely scrubbed out. Not at anytime on a bike do you compromise safety and certainly not in the mountains on cold wet roads.
So Jackkkkkk! New tyre please! We rode about 40 miles to the small prairie town of Pincher Creek and the only motorcycle dealer in 100 miles.
While we waited for the front wheel to be removed and the new tyre to be fitted, the locals gave us a perspective on life in Pincher Creek.
Out on the prairie this was an unusual day because while it was raining it was completely calm i.e. no wind. What made this unusual was that the prevailing winds that sweep this town almost 365 days a year were absent for the moment we were there. They are so strong that empty B Doubles get blown over on the highway, RV’s end up in the prairie itself, and the good townsfolk have to keep everything pegged down.
Sounds great doesn’t it? Well the locals didn’t seem to mind, they just sort of thought it was normal.
The rest of the day was a long 'schlep’ albeit through some magnificent scenery, but nothing to stop for like the big day before.
Having said that, we did stop for a very nice organic lunch in the very pretty ski town of Fernie. It was great to look up and see the grassed ski runs cascading down the spectacular mountains that surround the town. And it was nice because the sun was out. We stripped off the wet weather gear and just basked in the sun for while.
Arriving in Radium Hot Springs we were just a little disappointed. The hot springs area was tired and the town was not a more than a row of buildings on the road. Although the road ran through a valley between two rows of mountains covered in snow. Very impressive
But that was far enough for the day and we were set for the run to Banff in the morning
