A relaxed day, lots of sunshine, swimming and a short 260 miles on the bikes

The Lo Lo Hot Springs Hotel took a lot of leaving. Rocket woke uncharacteristically early and sleep walked to the natural hot tub. The fascination he had for this experience was not just the tub and the way it made you feel, but the fact that such volumes of water were flowing from underground at exactly the right temperature.

The road from Lo Lo back though Missoula was uneventful until we crossed the ridge line and took a first glimpse of the soaring range that starts the Glacier National Park. Just beyond those peaks (pics below) is a valley that contains the largest natural freshwater lake in the western part of the United States.  It is huge; with a surface area of 496 km2. It is 43.9 km long and 24.9 km wide. Its maximum depth is 370.7 ft (113.0 m).

And we arrived at a beautiful part of the lake called Somers at about 1pm, on a calm blue, sunny day that was about as perfect as is possible. While Somers on Westernport has a similar bucolic feel to it, the seaside is different and not a lot can match this setting in the Rockies.

We sat down to a great lunch overlooking the lake and decided to have the rest of the day off. We booked the log cabins right next door to the restaurant and across the road from the lake.

The size of this lake, the colour and the fact that it was ringed by the most amazing mountain range was as almost everything on this trip, impossible to describe. It was too good to leave and the water was too inviting not to swim in it.

It was time to play Icebergers and break out the Speedos, goggles and hats. Great swim and an even better relaxed afternoon followed.

Tomorrow the 'Highway to the Sun'
