Yangshou is the China I had imagined from all the photos....great karst scenery and long rivers with rafts lazily plying up and down. We head to Yulong River to take in the best part of the river and decline all offers of a raft, half the village seem to be chasing after us shouting out 'bamboo, bamboo!'...they argue that we cant walk in our footwear (trusty birkenstocks), however we persevere. We decide to walk a bit, to take in the scenery and see some of the local villages, and maybe get a raft further down the river when the price has gone down!

The walk includes several river crossings on a boat, and we meander up the river between the amazing skyscraping cone-shaped peaks that "sprout" out of the ground and are lushly blanketed with subtropical vegetation. The villages are very rustic, with chickens running around everywhere and we walk alongside many farms. Finally when we realise that we havent enough time to walk the whole trail before it gets dark, and we are getting bitten to pieces by sandflies we succumb to a bamboo raft for the remainder of the river and leisurely downstream.

Later that night we head to the Light show, I hadnt expected it to be so spectacular! 600 Locals are involved in a theatre on the river, using boats, fire and amazing costumes that light up with bulbs and the surrounding 12 karst peaks setting the scene. Its too hard to describe, visually amazing, one of the best shows I have seen!

The following day we spend wandering amongst the peaks and up the Li River....I wish we had longer here....
