Where I stayed
Celia`s bed and breakfast

Samaipata, a lush and temperate retreat just three hours taxi ride away.  Gringo heaven with a full quota of european expats and Bolivian second home mansions.  Inca ruins waterfalls and hiking.

It may be just three hours away but the road is awful as we will learn to be the norm in Bolivia. A couple of major bridges are being constructed/reconstructed and hopefully landslides wonīt wipe them out too soon. Bolivian travel is going to be challenging if the landslides donīt get you the blockades will.

Its a tiny place with the usual shady square, some very nice hostels and places to stay and we go for something a bit different - Celiaīs B & B. Great house and garden with duvets and really comfy beds and huge breakfasts. Celia our host is the best thing about the place. An eccentric Brazilian divorcee, retired from her Rio law career and living now in Samaipata with her son Fernando. We are Celiaīs first guests for over a year!!!  - she blames it on the president and the awful road. Celia can talk... and talk in English, Portugese, French and Spanish. She spoils us rotten, bakes us an enormous chocolate cake and homemade ice cream and shares her latest DVDs with us. Pirate of course, filmed by some young dude on a mobile phone in the cinema!  They end 3/4 of the way through, Celia doesnīt seem to notice!

Out and about we visit the pre inca ruins of El Fuerte and spot a couple of Condors soaring over head. Not had our usual fix of ruins for a while so make the most of it. A trek to Amboro Cloud forest with Celiaīs mate Fred is fab.  Tree ferns over 12 ms high, the biggest in the world so they say, wonderful trees and plants and views. Just us and a pleasant young traveller from America who sang and talked to mountains when things got tough!

Met up with some good folks from Santa Cruz - Camilla, Andreas, Amanda and Nick , spent good times eating and drinking wine , yes what a nice turn up - Bolivia has some reasonable red wine , hurrah! hic. Spend a dreamy day at the local waterfalls with Camilla and Andreas before planning the bus ride ( another journey with a bad rep!) to Sucre.
