Caught the 9am train out of Durango.  There are two per day, one at 8:30 and one at 9:00.  Three hours plus to Silverton along trackes beside the Animas river.  Sat behind and chatted with a couple from Penrith in NSW.  Also two guys who got off halfway to Silverton, to hike for four nights in the forest and climb a couple of fourteeners.  They had large packs as they needed to be totally self sufficient - hardy indeed!

The train had about nine carriages mostly enclosed coaches plus a couple of open sided carriages and one up-market (First Class) carriage (which you apparently need to book six to eight weerks in advance.

Great scenery and well worth the trip.  Make sure you wear sunglasses if you're going to stick your head out the window as coal cinders are a constant.

Arrived in Silverton around 12:30 and walked around, had some lunch and then boarded the bus back (mainly to save an hour and a half on the return journey).  Bus back was also worthwhile as the driver gave an interesting commentary all the way back, and the road scenery was good for me to see (as I had been concentrating on the road yesterday when driving the same route).

Arrived in Durango around 4:30 and more sightseeing, plus a compusory Cold Rock icecream.  Dinner at Cyprus restaurant again, good again.  Off to Mesa Verde tomorrow.
